The Chair of Archaeology at the University of Tartu is a research and teaching unit, focussing on the prehistoric and medieval period inEstonia. The main aim of the unit is to offer higher education in archaeology at all academic levels. Future archaeologists will be offered their basic guidance, but general knowledge will also be brought to students of other fields. The preparation includes both the prehistoric period, and the Middle Ages, with focus on the archaeology of Estonia and the Baltic Sea countries. Several voluntary courses enable students to gain additional knowledge from contact areas with neighbouring disciplines. In addition to auditory guidance, possibilities for participation in fieldwork are offered every summer.

The Chair of Archaeology participates in the Centre of Excellence in Cultural Theory.
